What is Spine Med Decompression
It is a safe and painless Non-Surgical, Non-invasive treatment for:
• Herniated Discs
• Degenerative Discs
• Sciatica
• Radiculopathy (Pain shooting down the extremities)
• Facet Syndromes (Joint Impairment Due to Arthritis)
• Spinal Stenosis
• Spondylisthesis < Grade II
• Pre & Post Surgical Patients without Hardware
• Designed to correct the problem, not just relieve symptoms!
You can live without back pain, neck pain, numbness and tingling. Back and neck pain are the number one reason for ER visits in the country, affecting 80% of us at one time or another. These problems often mean a permanent loss of some function, forcing you to give up on certain activities in life you once enjoyed. The good news is SpineMED spinal disc decompression a treatment program with no surgery, no drugs, no incisions or injections, no scar tissue, and no down time from work. And, for 86-92% of people, absolutely no more pain!!
In our office, we have seen outstanding results in relieving the debilitating pain caused by degenerative, bulging, herniated, or ruptured discs, as well as sciatic, posterior facet syndrome, spinal stenosis, and many failed spine surgery cases without hardware. Most patients, depending on the type of work and previous pain limitations, are able to perform the normal levels of activity or recreation during their treatment program. The process is gradual and requires active participation by the patient during and following the protocol. SpineMED decompression is safe without any side effects or complications. Patients with conditions that compromise the integrity of the spinal column, such as gross osteoporosis, spondylolisthesis grade 2 or above, fractures, tumors, congenital pars defects, or severe scoliosis are not candidates for Spinal Disc Decompression. Previous spinal surgery is not contraindicated unless hardware (screws, rods, cages, pins, etc.) have been implanted in the spine.
Our treatments consist of percussion to relax tense muscles, 30 minutes of decompression on the SpineMED Table followed by tens, EMS, and ice/heat therapy. After the first 10 treatments we begin stretching out muscles, followed by physical therapy and exercise to re-stabilize the spinal muscles and prevent future injury. Most patients find relief with 15 to 25 treatments, but the average course of treatment is 20 sessions. Sessions are performed for one hour a day, 4 days a week for 5 weeks. As part of your treatment, we provide a unique neck or lumbar brace allowing distraction to continue throughout the rest of your day. We provide all the necessary nutrition to specifically aid in the healing process. We will give dietary recommendations in order to lose weight if needed, and to provide proper nutrition to continue your healing process naturally.
Why are we prone to injury? Your spine must be stable and flexible so that your posture is supported and so you may twist and bend. When there is trouble this is mechanically very challenging to the body and makes your spine vulnerable to injury.
The spinal cord is protected by vertebrae, connected by ligaments and muscles. A disc is the spongy substance that separates the vertebrae and acts like a shock absorber by providing a cushion. The inner disc is made up of a gelatinous like substance known as the nucleus and has a fibrous outer layer for support called the annulus. The discs do not have a supply of blood vessels to nourish and replenish them rather they depend on the transfer of fluids, nutrients and oxygen from the vertebrae above and below. This transfer of nutrients depends on the difference in pressure between the inside of the disc and surrounding vertebrae and blood vessels. This is why most disc nutrition and regeneration takes place when we lie down and the pressures are reduced. This process is not very efficient, and as we age, eat poorly, and decrease exercise the disc is exposed to wear and tear greater than its ability to heal and regenerate.
In your lower spine, compressive forces from sitting, bending and lifting can equal 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of pressure per square inch. Repeated injury weakens and eventually tears the annulus outer layer of your disc allowing the inner nucleus to bulge or leak out causing a herniation. This herniation may press on spinal nerves causing numbness or pain down your arms or legs.
Damaged discs seldom heal because discs are constantly under pressure, even at rest. The SpineMED table offers the latest state of the art technology with clinically proven principles to non-surgically decompress the spine and reduce the pressure inside the disc. Reducing this pressure facilitates the transfer of fluids, nutrients and oxygen back inside of the disc which results in re-hydration of a dehydrated disc. During normal activity, the pressure inside the discs typically range between 100 mm/Hg to 300 mg/Hg by slowly distracting your vertebrae it drops the inter-vertebral disc pressure by -150mm/Hg so that like a vacuum the disc retracts back to where it belongs, relieving nerve pressure. Decompression is unloading due to distraction and positioning.
Our patients have enjoyed great success with their treatments. Healing is a process that requires time. In the majority of cases pain meds, injections, and physical therapy only serve to treat the symptoms and do not fix the cause of the problem. So, initial positive results usually do not last until after the disc is fixed. Most people who choose to have surgery do not rehabilitate properly and the formation of scar tissue causes the problem to re-occur either at the same level or the levels above and below the surgical site.
Surgery itself has less than a 50% success rate. Its goal is to treat the symptoms by removing the lamina and/or the disc portion that is putting pressure on the delicate spinal nerves. By cutting off the herniated disc portion, it can relieve the pressure on the nerve, but does not give any more support to normal compresses forces. Severely degenerated discs are surgically decompressed by removing the disc and fusing the two vertebrae together. This prevents mobility at that segment and puts more pressure on the segments above and below, which eventually will begin to degenerate too. Often patients will require surgery again in the future. Surgery is life threatening, painful, requires drugs that often yield other side effects, and cloud the mind. Surgery causes severe scar tissue to form, and it requires down time from work.
The Treatment with SpineMED is so comfortable, that in most cases patients fall asleep during therapy. Through SpineMED decompression therapy, Dr. Precourt offers a complete program for success and uses the only NON-HARNESS type of decompression table in the metroplex. No longer are doctors and patients forced to use the old rope and pulley style of decompression. This unique pelvic restraint system offers much more comfort for the patient with precise positioning each and every time.

In 10-15% of the population, the muscles of the spine are so protective of the injured spinal area that they just will not release despite treatments. If this is the case, or if work will not permit you 1 hour per day for 5 weeks for decompression therapy another approach that is much safer than surgery and non-invasive is Manipulation Under Anesthesia. Manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) is a method of treatment of the spine and extremities under anesthesia used to treat certain musculo-skeletal conditions that have not sufficiently responded to conventional and/or chiropractic care. These conditions can be due to a build up of scar tissue, chronic muscle pain, and/or sensitivity to injured areas due to previous immobilizations or surgeries that yielded excessive scar tissue. When movement of the spine and extremities is intolerable to the patient, the treatment under anesthesia allows the muscle spasm cycle to shut off sedating the pain perceiving nerves and creating complete relaxation for the doctor to stretch muscles groups reducing or even eliminating scar tissue and adhesions. MUA is a non-invasive surgery performed in an operating room with conscious sedation. The actual adjustments and stretching techniques are very gentle since there is no muscle tension under anesthesia. The patient should experience an immediate increase in range of motion and see change in disturbances from adhesions and shortened/tensed tissue within a short time following the procedure.
This procedure takes 20-30 minutes. MUA is repeated 3-4 days in a row depending on the severity of your problem. We do, however, recommend that you do not work since everyone responds to anesthesia differently. Following this procedure you can proceed with decompression if disc herniation was an issue and/or physical therapy twice a week for 4-6 weeks and enjoy the benefits of a pain free spine.
