Dr. Laura Precourt’s Biography
I grew up in Kensington, CT from 1971 with my three older brothers and sister. During my childhood, I watched my mother undergo numerous unsuccessful back surgeries, and numerous unsuccessful pain medications and alternatives for severe degenerative disc disease. Her unbearable back and leg pain left her little energy for the physical part of motherhood, and usually rendered her to her to bed propped up by pillows. My brothers, sisters and I had the opportunity to ingest a lot of junk food. We ate bowls and bowls of sugar cereals, drank plenty of soda and juices, micro-waved most foods, had plentiful breads and pastas, canned foods, frozen meals, and very little fruits and vegetables. Dinners were always provided, but being forced to eat vegetables was not enjoyable. Then there was what seemed to be an endless supply of snacks. Twinkies, brownies, cookies, cakes, deviled dogs. Would it be surprising to know that my youngest brother and I were always sick? We caught all the childhood illnesses, had many flu’s, colds, earaches, and we even got pneumonia together. My brother lived with a Kleenex box! We always seemed to be taking something for symptoms and we were always on antibiotics (the pink stuff!). My family had to move to Texas when I was 10 years old in hopes for a dryer climate to reduce my mother’s pain. It helped some. As a young teenager into adulthood, I continued to get sick often. I had numerous strep throat infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, and viruses. I began suffering anxiety, depression, panic attacks, joint aches, stomach pains, IBS, insomnia, thyroid problems, and heart palpitations. I had a tonsillectomy where after I suffered lung infections instead of throat infections, a laparoscopic surgery where they drained cysts on my ovaries, and took out my appendix prophylactically. After that is when I developed IBS. My diet continued to be terrible. I ate lots of toast, cereal, sandwiches, soda and junk food. I ended up on many medications: ant-acids, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety meds, smooth muscle relaxers, muscle relaxers, pain meds, birth control pills, sinus/allergy medications, sleep medications, thyroid meds, heart meds, and more anti-biotics. All the while I was living life like this was normal.
I did not enjoy watching my mother suffer during my life so I decided I wanted to go to med school in hopes to find “the cure”. I became a paramedic first then I worked for a family practice, an internal medicine practice, and a gastro-endoscopy center. Right before going to med school I found chiropractic. I learned that chiropractors can give the body the tools to heal itself without drugs or surgery. I originally thought chiropractors just cracked backs, and were not “real” doctors. But, when I realized that drugs/surgery did not cure my mom, I had other alternatives.
My first week of Chiropractic school I had suffered a car accident that rendered me with severe muscle aches and pains. I needed a chiropractic miracle in order to really “believe” that this type of care could really work. I tried several different types of chiropractic techniques, and slightly improved with most of them. Then I found torque release technique. This technique allows the practitioner to treat the primary issues not secondary ones. This technique improved my aches and pains by 70%. But, there was still something missing, I wasn’t’ 100% yet. I went to an Applied Kinesiology Seminar where the instructor called me out of 200 doctors to demonstrate something. Through muscle testing, he told me everything about myself without my mentioning any of my history. He described my horrific diet, and told me if I didn’t change it I would die. He told me I had to take these disgusting adrenal support pills because my adrenal glands were shot, my thyroid and heart were not working properly. Out of pure stubbornness to prove him wrong, I mean after all what does what I eat have anything to do with my health, and because many of my classmates were there, I had to change my diet. I decided to eat the proteins with vegetables and fruit in between meals as I was told. I did this for one month. I had no idea at the time that this was the beginning of a new life for me. Over the next nine months, I continued to get adjusted and eat well, and gradually was able to get off all of my medications, and had lost almost all of my symptoms. Over the rest of my education, I became completely well again and had not been sick at all. I just continued to get regular adjustments and eat well.
I am now a Board Certified Chiropractic Kinesiologist. Chiropractic saved my life, and I am here to share that blessing with my patients.
